Types of Wasps

There are more than 30,000 types of wasps found all around the world. In North America, there are approximately 4,000 different types of wasps, but only a small handful of them are considered common pests that you might see dive-bombing your barbecue guests or making nests around your home or property. Common types of wasps our khaki-clad service pros have encountered include:
  • Paper wasps: Brownish in color, paper wasps consume dead wood material to build their waterproof, umbrella-shaped nests in residential yards. Their colonies usually contain between 12 and 100 wasps.
  • Bald-faced hornet: Bald-faced hornets are black with white patterns on most of the face. These wasps build their paper nests 3-4 feet off the ground in trees, shrubs, houses, sheds, or other structures. Their colonies contain between 100 and 400 wasps—yikes!
  • Mud dauber: Usually black with pale markings or a blue metallic luster, mud daubers construct their nests out of mud. They tend to build their nests in sheltered areas such as under eaves, on porch ceilings, and in garages, sheds, barns, and attics, and they do not live in colonies.
  • Yellowjacket: With yellow and black patterns over their head and body, yellowjackets live in colonies with up to 4,000 workers (double yikes!). They construct their paper nests in trees, shrubs, or other protected places such as soil cavities and tree stumps.
  • Cicada killer wasps: Cicada killer wasps nest in the ground, leaving mounds of dirt with a hole in the center. Their nests are often found in places where sunlight is present, near shrubs or the sidewalk. These black and pale yellow solitary wasps do not live in colonies.
With nearly a decade of experience handling wasp infestations of all sizes, our wasp control experts can quickly and accurately determine the type of wasp on your property and implement the best possible solution to protect you, your family, and your home.

Are Wasps Dangerous? What Happens If I Get Close To a Wasp Nest?

Unless you are allergic, a single wasp sting is not dangerous. However, wasps can severely injure someone when they attack in swarms. Unprovoked wasp stings are very rare. However, since wasps are territorial, they will not hesitate to attack anyone who disturbs their nest.

They often attack in packs within 20 feet of their nests and can sting repeatedly, making them potentially dangerous. Since wasps are attracted to food, they are also known to sting someone too close to the food they are attracted to.

Our wasp control experts recommend staying safe by avoiding wasps and their nests. You might be tempted to try to swat one of their nests down with a broom. Don’t do it! If you find a nest on your property, reach out to our service pros at Greenix Pest Control.

We have extensive experience with wasps and know exactly how to remove them from your property safely and effectively. Instead of risking your health and safety swatting away at wasps nests, give us a call, and we’ll be at your home in no time to take care of the problem.
