Home Remedies for Insect Stings or Bites

Knowing what to do when you or someone around you get stung or bitten by an insect can make all the difference in being able to relieve the pain with home remedies.

Mosquito bites although seemingly harmless can be quite itchy. The itching will subside within a few hours however, there are a few things that can be done to help relieve the pain and itching if it becomes too much. First of all, DO NOT SCRATCH! Wash with soap and water, use an anti-itch cream and an ice pack to reduce itching and swelling.

Spider bites can be quite painful but can be relieved with a few home remedies. Wash the area with warm water and soap. Like other common bites and stings use ice packs and anti-itch cream to relieve the itch and swelling. If the bite is located on the legs and arms elevation helps.

When a Honey Bee Stings it leaves its stinger behind and then dies unlike, wasps and hornets. Immediately after a bee stings you it is vital that you remove the stinger. This can be done by using your fingernail or credit card. This is important and can minimalize the amount of toxins released into the body. After you get the stinger our wash the area with soap and warm water. Following cleaning out the area there are a few home remedies that can help relieve the pain and itching.

  • Honey- use a small amount of honey on the affected area and cover with a loose bandage.
  • Baking Soda- make a paste out of baking soda and water. Apply the paste to the affected area cover with a loose bandage and leave on for 15 minutes.
  • Apple cider vinegar- soak the affected area in apple cider vinegar for 15 minutes. This is an option that is likely to neutralize bee venom.
  • Toothpaste- although it is not proven why this is sometimes effective, it has in some cases helped relieve the pain. Apply some toothpaste to the affected area.

However, there can be those that experience severe allergic reactions. If you experience hives, swelling of the tongue and throat, difficulty breathing, rapid heart-rate etc. seek medical attention immediately. These bites and stings can be treated with home remedies and over the counter remedies to relieve the pain, itching and swelling. However, if you experience any severe reactions seek medical help immediately.
