What is the Difference between a Mouse and a Rat?

While all rodents have common identifying features such as incisor teeth in the upper jaw, short legs, and long tails, rats and mice are the most common rodents encountered in the United States. Weighing as much as 10 ounces, rats are larger than mice. They have thick bodies, thick, hairless tails, large feet, and small ears. They consume up to one ounce of food a day and can produce up to 10 pups per litter. Mice can be identified from their larger rodent cousins. Mice eat about 0.1 ounces of food per day and produce larger litters than rats, at 16 pups per litter.

Additional identifying characteristics of a mouse are:

  • Large ears
  • Long, thin tails covered in hairs
  • Large bodies
  • Shorter hairs
  • Lighter-colored bellies
  • Weigh up to 1.5 ounces

Health Risks Associated with Mice

Mice are notorious for plaguing humans and infesting buildings and homes, and mice can gain access from even the smallest of entry points. Due to the many risks associated with mice, they are a cause of concern for just about any homeowner. Mice are known for posing a danger to health because they carry and transmit mouse-related diseases, carry and spread parasites such as ticks and fleas, and contaminate food with urine and feces. Additionally, mice pose property damage risk, too. Though they’re small, they can ruin your attic via the accumulation of urine and feces. And since mice are rodents, they must constantly gnaw to keep their teeth under control. This means a mice infestation represents a higher risk of house fires if they chew through electrical wiring.

The Greenix Mice Control Process

Our professional and certified pest control service pros will thoroughly examine your property to locate any potential access points to your home. They will then place multiple rodent bait boxes around your property to keep mice from entering your home. Our rodent baiting boxes contain a specially formulated bait designed to dehydrate rodents. Once ingested, mice will leave your property in search of a water source. These heavy boxes are locked up, and only we have a key, which means you never have to worry about children or pets finding their way inside. Every season, our professionals inspect these boxes and replace the bait whenever necessary to ensure continued, lasting protection. This means that any future infestations will be stopped before they start.
